Who is Kai Bosch? Meet the next "biggest gay popstar in the universe"
Becoming the "biggest gay popstar in the universe" is a dream held by many queer artists across the country, but one young musician is intent on making that dream a reality.
Kai Bosch is a 23-year-old pop prodigy who is "on a mission to make the biggest pop songs in the country, if not the world".
Sitting down with Gaydio's Dave Cooper earlier this week, Kai spilled his beans and gave us an exclusive look into what goes into becoming a pop sensation.
Originally from Cornwall, the young singer was introduced to the world of music during his childhood, often writing songs in secret. After being pushed by family and friends, he made the decision to start sharing his talent with the world.
Despite now steadily climbing the ladder to success, his journey has not been without its twists and turns.
The latest bold move from the starlet has been a genre shift in his latest album "Popstar of Your Dreams". The EP dives into his personal journey of trying to make it in the industry, blending infectious pop hooks with contemplative lyricism. Compared to his older songs which focused on themes of mental health, heartbreak and self-acceptance, the new record is an unapologetic celebration of self-empowerment and confidence.
On why he made this shift, Bosch told Gaydio's Dave Cooper "I just got off the back of this tour doing all these kind of dark and sad and spooky breakup songs. And I just got into the studio and I was like, that literally was like the worst year of my life. And singing those songs just like made me so sad."
The young star started to rethink what type of music he wanted to make: "if I was back to being this 14 year old gay kid with no friends in the middle of Cornwall, what would be the biggest escape for me? And I was like... Well, at the time, I was obsessed with Girls Aloud and Marina and the Diamonds and just kind of all these. My first album that I owned was Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Those are my biggest influences and my biggest inspirations."
With the help of producer Duncan Mills, "Popstar of Your Dreams" was born. The EP has been gaining recognition across the industry, and has turned the heads of some of the biggest artists.
In July, the rising pop sensation found himself face-to-face (via FaceTime, that is) with none other than the legendary Elton John during a special segment of his 'Rocket Hour' radio show.
Known for his ability to spot talent and champion new voices in the industry, Elton John didn’t hold back in his praise for the young artist saying "When i first heard Kai Bosch's music, I knew I had to meet him."
Describing the experience as "amazing", Bosch told Gaydio that "it was amazing to talk to him one-to-one just about our experiences of, you know, just being gay musicians, obviously, you know, it's so different to kind of, you know, him kind of coming up through the scene compared to me now, and that's because of people like him."
Despite the interview going well, Kai told Dave about how a technical difficulty almost derailed the interaction.
"The interview is a FaceTime call and I had made sure I had like, you know, I had good background. had good wifi. I was, you know, prepped and then, you know, get the FaceTime and it's like, Oh, Elton John's FaceTiming " he recalled. "He asked me the first question and I'm like, oh, what a great question. I kind of start answering. Then just the screen goes blank and it says, your connection's bad ".
He laughed and admitted "I could count on one hand, the amount of people who have had to say to Elton John on FaceTime, oh, can you hear me? Can you see me?."
He then added "what's so funny is they posted like a video of the interview afterwards and I'm bright red. And now there's the context for you, that's why I was so embarrassed."
On plans for the future, Kai Bosch told Gaydio "I am desperate to do Eurovision for the UK and I will do anything to do it." He added "I fully intend on winning because I have some bops. I have some bops in the back catalogue and it'd be my biggest dream."
We're all manifesting for you, Kai!
